Mentorship
Our mentors and mentees come from many backgrounds - prospect management, research, analytics, etc. The mentorship program pairs experienced development staff with anyone new to the field, professionals who are facing new challenges at work and need assistance, or anyone who wants to be more connected to the prospect development world.
In general, mentors and mentees meet either in person or virtually at least once a week. Mentors should be available via phone or email to coach mentees and answer their questions. Each pair is responsible for deciding the specific nature of their relationship - availability, meeting frequency, desired outcomes, etc.
Check out a mentee testimony from Anne Melton, Assistant Director, University Relations Research, University of Puget Sound:
I have the Apra-NW mentorship program to thank for my career in prospect research. I had worked in development for several years but wanted to apply my fundraising background to a new career path without starting from scratch. I found the Apra-NW website and couldn't believe I had never heard of this niche in development work! After signing up for a membership, I enrolled in the mentorship program so I could gain some practical experience and learn from someone in the field. By a magical stroke of luck, I was matched with the illustrious Cecilia Hogan who shared the ins and outs of the sector and gave me homework to practice my research skills. A few months after meeting, a research position opened up at Cecilia's organization and she encouraged me to apply. Much to my delight, I was hired! Four years later, I continue to love my work.
